IPhone 3G upgrade to iOS 4.x - Don't do it if you haven't done!!

Every time I connected my iphone to iTunes comes up with a message telling something like there is a new firmware version until finally I upgraded from my old iOS 3.x to iOS4.x and now my phone is terribly slow :S

So if you haven't upgraded yet my recommendation is don't do it... Now a lot of applications crash, the phone is very slow even for apps like the calculator... I think Apple should pay more attention to provide better support for old iphones at least for some time, in my case I have 1 year with my phone and I'd expect better performance from firmware upgrades. The bad news is that I don't know if this happened to you but when I had iOS 3.x some apps that I recently update didn't work with iOS 3.x (like Yahoo music).

Let me know what you think of this and if you know an easy way to go back to iOS 3.x or better yet to ask Apple for better support on next releases of iOS.

Michael Porter's 3 Generic Competitive Strategies

Abstract:
Bellow is brief a summary of Michael Porter's 3 Generic Competitive Strategies,  which are useful tools for Strategic Planning and some references for further reading.

Introduction:

When I was studying Applied Informatics Master's program at ITESO some years back I was exposed to some of the ideas of Michael Porter regarding 3 very interesting topics:

  1. The idea that there are only exists 3 true generic different competitive strategies that a firm can implement.
  2. The idea that there is a generic 5 force model to analyze any industry and determine if you can compete in that industry and be profitable
  3. A generic framework called the value chain for thinking strategically about the activities involved in any business and assessing their relative cost and role in differentiation.
 Details:

3 Generic Competitive Strategies

Well according to Porter there two types of competitive advantage a firm can possess: low cost or differentiation. The two basic types of competitive advantage combined with the scope of the activities for which a firm seeks to archive them lead to three generic strategies: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus.

Cost Leadership

Is the clearest of the three generic strategies. Is when a firm is set out to be the lowest-cost producer in its industry.  According to Porter the sources of cost advantage are varied and depend on the structure of the industry.

Differentiation
In a differentiation strategy a firm seeks to be unique in its industry along some dimensions that are widely valued by buyers. For example, a quality strategy is a differentiation strategy for a product or a service may be rewarded with a premium price.

According to Porter there can be more than one successful differentiation strategy in a given industry as opposed to a cost leadership which usually is only one.

Focus
Focus strategy rests on the choice of a narrow competitive scope within an industry. By optimizing its strategy for the target segments, the focuser seeks to achieve a competitive advantage in its target segments even though it does not possess a competitive advantage overall.

The focus strategy has two variants. In cost focus a firm seeks a cost advantage in its target segment, while in differentiation focus a firm seeks differentiation i its target segment. The target segments must either have buyers with unusual needs or else the production and delivery system that best serves the target segment must differ from that of other industry segments.
